Who is left out?: Understanding the Sources of Platform Utilization by the Demographics of the Monterey Bay Region\u27s Entrepreneurs Participating in Programs of the Institute for Innovation & Economic Development
Background: As the United States becomes a more racially diverse country, particular challenges face specific demographics of people. The practical and policy ideas to address the disparities of race/ethnicity, gender, or age. While entrepreneurial startup activity is on the rise, some particular entrepreneurs remain underrepresented. Entrepreneurs of minority, including race, gender, and age, continue to have lower rates of entrepreneurship than their White men counterparts do. The barriers of entrepreneurship among minority people and outcomes are particular challenges and influenced by a combination of factors. Such as family, education, and availability of financial and social support. However, not many studies have been conducted in the Monterey Bay Region, consisting of Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties in the central coast of California, just south of the San Francisco Bay area. Limitations in the research significantly contribute to our lack of understanding of the potential intertwining of factors that likely influences startup-related outcomes among minorities in the Monterey Bay Region.
Purpose:In this study, we aim to understand the demographic background of the entrepreneurs of the Institute for Innovation and Economic Development. To investigate the institute’s program sources of platform utilization of the Monterey Region\u27s entrepreneurs by using demographic background and platform sources. This project aims to improve the ability of policymakers and service providers to assist in the planning and implementation of services that meet the diverse entrepreneurial needs of the local population—ensuring that all groups have equal access to entrepreneurship programs.
Methods:In this exploratory study, we conducted 62 entrepreneurial surveys to investigate the demographic factors, including gender, age, racial group (White & non-White), and education level. To identify the relationship of entrepreneurs by different backgrounds and the source of platform utilization that they are used to gathering from the Institute for Innovation & Economic Development’s programs.
Conclusion:This paper reveals the relationship between existing challenges from different demographic backgrounds and various platform sources of information on entrepreneurial drive among minority entrepreneurs and the impact of business growth in the Monterey Bay Region. Institute for Innovation & Economic Development could strengthen the market on the school and teacher platform. Additionally, they could collaborate with other related institutes and help them do propaganda among the business ecosystem
Media Richness and User Continuance to Instant Messaging
Media richness determines adoption of information systems. Insufficient research was done for investigating its influence on user continuance of using instant messaging applications. This study used classic IS and psychological theories to construct a research framework. This study gathered more than 200 responses by using an online form. LISREL software was used to conduct structural equation modeling technique to test the research framework. The findings indicated that various but not all dimensions of media richness positively contribute to users’ continuance to use instant messaging applications. Specific dimensions provide insights for managers to design their applications to effectively retain their users
Whole-body vibration training effect on physical performance and obesity in mice
The purpose of this study was to verify the beneficial effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) training on exercise performance, physical fatigue and obesity in mice with obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into two groups: normal group (n=6), fed standard diet (control), and experimental group (n=18), fed a HFD. After 4-week induction, followed by 6-week WBV of 5 days per week, the 18 obese mice were divided into 3 groups (n=6 per group): HFD with sedentary control (HFD), HFD with WBV at relatively low-intensity (5.6 Hz, 0.13 g) (HFD+VL) or high-intensity (13 Hz, 0.68 g) (HFD+VH). A trend analysis revealed that WBV increased the grip strength in mice. WBV also dose-dependently decreased serum lactate, ammonia and CK levels and increased glucose level after the swimming test. WBV slightly decreased final body weight and dose-dependently decreased weights of epididymal, retroperitoneal and perirenal fat pads and fasting serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, CK, glucose, total cholesterol and triacylglycerol. Therefore, WBV could improve exercise performance and fatigue and prevent fat accumulation and obesity-associated biochemical alterations in obese mice. It may be an effective intervention for health promotion and prevention of HFD-induced obesity

Comparison of antipsychotic dose equivalents for acute bipolar mania and schizophrenia
Are antipsychotic dose equivalents between acute mania and schizophrenia the same? Study selection and analysis Six databases were systematically searched (from inception to 17 September 2022) to identify blinded randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that used a flexible-dose oral antipsychotic drug for patients with acute mania. The mean and SD of the effective dose and the pre–post changes in manic symptoms were extracted. A network meta-analysis (NMA) under a frequentist framework was performed to examine the comparative efficacy between the antipsychotics. A classic mean dose method (sample size weighted) was used to calculate each antipsychotic dose equivalent to 1 mg/day olanzapine for acute mania. The antipsychotic dose equivalents of acute mania were compared with published data for schizophrenia. Findings We included 42 RCTs which enrolled 11 396 participants with acute mania. The NMA showed that risperidone was superior to olanzapine (reported standardised mean difference: −022, 95% CI −0.41 to –0.02), while brexpiprazole was inferior to olanzapine (standardised mean difference: 0.36, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.64). The dose equivalents to olanzapine (with SD) were 0.68 (0.23) for haloperidol, 0.32 (0.07) for risperidone, 0.60 (0.11) for paliperidone, 8.00 (1.41) for ziprasidone, 41.46 (5.98) for quetiapine, 1.65 (0.32) for aripiprazole, 1.23 (0.20) for asenapine, 0.53 (0.14) for cariprazine and 0.22 (0.03) for brexpiprazole. Compared with the olanzapine dose equivalents for schizophrenia, those of acute mania were higher for quetiapine (p<0.001, 28.5%) and aripiprazole (p<0.001, 17.0%), but lower for haloperidol (p<0.001, –8.1%) and risperidone (p<0.001, –15.8%).
Conclusions Antipsychotic drugs have been considered first-line treatment for acute mania, warranting specific dose equivalence for scientific and clinical purposes
Pyrazole compound BPR1P0034 with potent and selective anti-influenza virus activity
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Influenza viruses are a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. More recently, a swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus that is spreading via human-to-human transmission has become a serious public concern. Although vaccination is the primary strategy for preventing infections, influenza antiviral drugs play an important role in a comprehensive approach to controlling illness and transmission. In addition, a search for influenza-inhibiting drugs is particularly important in the face of high rate of emergence of influenza strains resistant to several existing influenza antivirals.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We searched for novel anti-influenza inhibitors using a cell-based neutralization (inhibition of virus-induced cytopathic effect) assay. After screening 20,800 randomly selected compounds from a library from ChemDiv, Inc., we found that BPR1P0034 has sub-micromolar antiviral activity. The compound was resynthesized in five steps by conventional chemical techniques. Lead optimization and a structure-activity analysis were used to improve potency. Time-of-addition assay was performed to target an event in the virus life cycle.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 50% effective inhibitory concentration (IC<sub>50</sub>) of BPR1P0034 was 0.42 ± 0.11 μM, when measured with a plaque reduction assay. Viral protein and RNA synthesis of A/WSN/33 (H1N1) was inhibited by BPR1P0034 and the virus-induced cytopathic effects were thus significantly reduced. BPR1P0034 exhibited broad inhibition spectrum for influenza viruses but showed no antiviral effect for enteroviruses and echovirus 9. In a time-of-addition assay, in which the compound was added at different stages along the viral replication cycle (such as at adsorption or after adsorption), its antiviral activity was more efficient in cells treated with the test compound between 0 and 2 h, right after viral infection, implying that an early step of viral replication might be the target of the compound. These results suggest that BPR1P0034 targets the virus during viral uncoating or viral RNA importation into the nucleus.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, BPR1P0034 is the first pyrazole-based anti-influenza compound ever identified and characterized from high throughput screening to show potent (sub-μM) antiviral activity. We conclude that BPR1P0034 has potential antiviral activity, which offers an opportunity for the development of a new anti-influenza virus agent.</p
Benchmarking of eight recurrent neural network variants for breath phase and adventitious sound detection on a self-developed open-access lung sound database-HF_Lung_V1
A reliable, remote, and continuous real-time respiratory sound monitor with
automated respiratory sound analysis ability is urgently required in many
clinical scenarios-such as in monitoring disease progression of coronavirus
disease 2019-to replace conventional auscultation with a handheld stethoscope.
However, a robust computerized respiratory sound analysis algorithm has not yet
been validated in practical applications. In this study, we developed a lung
sound database (HF_Lung_V1) comprising 9,765 audio files of lung sounds
(duration of 15 s each), 34,095 inhalation labels, 18,349 exhalation labels,
13,883 continuous adventitious sound (CAS) labels (comprising 8,457 wheeze
labels, 686 stridor labels, and 4,740 rhonchi labels), and 15,606 discontinuous
adventitious sound labels (all crackles). We conducted benchmark tests for long
short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU), bidirectional LSTM
(BiLSTM), bidirectional GRU (BiGRU), convolutional neural network (CNN)-LSTM,
CNN-GRU, CNN-BiLSTM, and CNN-BiGRU models for breath phase detection and
adventitious sound detection. We also conducted a performance comparison
between the LSTM-based and GRU-based models, between unidirectional and
bidirectional models, and between models with and without a CNN. The results
revealed that these models exhibited adequate performance in lung sound
analysis. The GRU-based models outperformed, in terms of F1 scores and areas
under the receiver operating characteristic curves, the LSTM-based models in
most of the defined tasks. Furthermore, all bidirectional models outperformed
their unidirectional counterparts. Finally, the addition of a CNN improved the

Acupuncture Effects on Cardiac Functions Measured by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a Feline Model
The usefulness of acupuncture (AP) as a complementary and/or alternative therapy in animals is well established but more research is needed on its clinical efficacy relative to conventional therapy, and on the underlying mechanisms of the effects of AP. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI), an important tool in monitoring cardiovascular diseases, provides a reliable method to monitor the effects of AP on the cardiovascular system. This controlled experiment monitored the effect electro-acupuncture (EA) at bilateral acupoint Neiguan (PC6) on recovery time after ketamine/xylazine cocktail anesthesia in healthy cats. The CMRI data established the basic feline cardiac function index (CFI), including cardiac output and major vessel velocity. To evaluate the effect of EA on the functions of the autonomic nervous and cardiovascular systems, heart rate, respiration rate, electrocardiogram and pulse rate were also measured. Ketamine/xylazine cocktail anesthesia caused a transient hypertension in the cats; EA inhibited this anesthetic-induced hypertension and shortened the post-anesthesia recovery time. Our data support existing knowledge on the cardiovascular benefits of EA at PC6, and also provide strong evidence for the combination of anesthesia and EA to shorten post-anesthesia recovery time and counter the negative effects of anesthetics on cardiac physiology
miRTarBase update 2014: an information resource for experimentally validated miRNA-target interactions
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules capable of negatively regulating gene expression to control many cellular mechanisms. The miRTarBase database (http://mirtarbase.mbc.nctu.edu.tw/) provides the most current and comprehensive information of experimentally validated miRNA-target interactions. The database was launched in 2010 with data sources for >100 published studies in the identification of miRNA targets, molecular networks of miRNA targets and systems biology, and the current release (2013, version 4) includes significant expansions and enhancements over the initial release (2010, version 1). This article reports the current status of and recent improvements to the database, including (i) a 14-fold increase to miRNA-target interaction entries, (ii) a miRNA-target network, (iii) expression profile of miRNA and its target gene, (iv) miRNA target-associated diseases and (v) additional utilities including an upgrade reminder and an error reporting/user feedback system

Trial sequential analysis and updated meta-analysis of fluvoxamine on clinical deterioration in adult patients with symptomatic COVID-19 infection
Preliminary meta-analyses suggested that fluvoxamine was effective in treating COVID-19 infection. However, the reliability of this evidence has not yet been examined. MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched to identify any randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from the inception of the databases to 5 February 2023. We used trial sequential analysis (TSA) to examine the reliability of the current existing evidence on the benefits of fluvoxamine on COVID-19 infection. The primary outcome was clinical deterioration, as defined in the original study (reported as odds ratio (OR), with 95% confidence intervals), and the secondary outcome was hospitalization. In the TSA, we used the relative risk reduction thresholds of 10, 20, and 30%. The updated meta-analysis of the five RCTs showed that fluvoxamine was not associated with lower odds of clinical deterioration when compared with a placebo (OR: 0.81; 0.59–1.11). The effect of fluvoxamine lay within the futility boundary (i.e., lack of effect) when using a 30% relative risk reduction threshold. The effect estimates lay between the superiority and futility boundary using the 10% and 20% threshold, and the required size of information was not reached for these two thresholds. The effect of fluvoxamine on the odds of hospitalization was not statistically significant (0.76; 0.56–1.03). In conclusion, there is no reliable evidence that fluvoxamine, when compared to a placebo, reduces the relative risk of clinical deterioration among adult patients with COVID-19 infection by 30%, and a relative risk reduction of 20% or 10% is still uncertain.
